Progesterone is a Sexual Steroid Hormone secreted by the Ovaries, Placenta and in small amounts by the Adrenal Cortex and in males the Testes. Progesterone is a female hormone, which is a great factor for the regulation of ovulation and menstruation and excessive or prolonged bleeding during Menstruation) is often caused by sub-optimal Progesterone levels, in many female Low serum Progesterone levels may cause Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS). The female body’s endogenous production of Progesterone falls to zero (or very close to zero) during and for some time prior to Menopause (Female).
Progesterone may help to prevent many types of Cardiovascular Diseases (due to its ability to minimize risk factors for Cardiovascular Diseases such as elevated LDL Cholesterol, lowered HDL Cholesterol and elevated Triglycerides levels).
Progesterone may help to prevent High Blood Pressure (by facilitating the excretion of excessive Sodium from the body).
Progesterone may facilitate recovery from (ischemic) Stroke.
Progesterone as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRP) is poorly absorbed when administered orally. Exogenous Progesterone as Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRP) is absorbed extremely efficiently through the Skin (in the form of a topically applied cream). The site of topical application of Progesterone should be rotated between the Breasts, Abdomen and Thighs in order to avoid over-saturation of any given region.
Biological Function of Progesterone
1- May help to prevent Heart Attack.
2- May help to prevent High Blood Pressure.
3- May help to facilitate recovery from Stroke (ischemic).
4- May protect against the Hair Loss.
5- May help to prevent Cancer – Uterus, Breast and Endometrium.
6- May inhibit the growth of Cancer – Prostate cells (by inhibiting the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by inhibit the activity of 5 Alpha-Reductase.
7- May lower elevated serum Triglycerides,, Cholesterol, LDL (Low Density Lipoprotein) and may increase HDL(High Density Lipoprotein).
8- May prevent and possibly revers Osteoporosis (by stimulating Osteoblast activity), Osteoblast-mediated Bone formation.
9- May facilitate the excretion of excessive Sodium from the body (due to Progesterone competing with Aldosterone for occupancy of the Kidneys)
10- may facilitate the formation and maintenance of Myelin Sheets.
11- Decline in Progesterone production may be involved in Postpartum – Depression.
12- may alleviate and may help to prevent some forms of Depression.
13- may help to restore normal Sleep cycles.
14- may alleviate Ovarian Cysts.
15- may alleviate Uterine fibroids (by counteracting the estrogens dominance that is the underlying cause of many cases of Uterine Fibroids).
Substances may Enhance the Function of Progesterone
1- Prolactin stimulates the production of Progesterone within the Ovaries
2- (LH) Luteinzing Hormone stimulates the Corpus Luteum during the Luteal Phase of the Menstrual Cycle to produce Progesterone
3- Vitamin C may increase Progesterone production in Luteal Phase Defect patients
4- Vitamin E
5- Vitamin B6
6- Vitamin B5
7- The Retinoic acid form of Vitamin A may enhance the production of Pregnenolone in the Central Nervous System.
